Today was a very disappointing day in clinic. There were only three patients all day, and all three of them did not qualify for our study. We ended up playing cards with the other volunteers for most of the morning.
The highlight of the day was a trip to Bake Shop. Bake Shop, which I have previously alluded to, is an amazing bakery about 15 minutes away from our apartment. It is only open on Tuesdays and Fridays, and on those days all the gringos in Xela converge on its very unassuming storefront to stock up on massive quantities of delicious American-style baked goods.
Today's purchase included:
1 loaf of 100% whole wheat bread
1 large loaf of banana bread
12 gingerbread cookies
1/2 pound of cheddar cheese
2 chocolate and creme squishy round things
Bake Shop has a special place in my heart. It is also somewhat legendary with my Spanish teacher, who shares affections for Bake Shop. Every time we talk about it, he only refers to it with the verb ser. Let me explain. It would be pretty normal to say "mañana bake shop está abierto" (tomorrow bake shop is open), but he always says something like this: "mañana es bake shop" (tomorrow is bake shop).
When he said this yesterday, I laughed like I always do, but only today did I realize how prophetic his words had been. Today was Bake Shop. Nothing else important happened. At least we had Bake Shop.
