6/13/08 - Earthquake

Last night at 10:00pm, Kalya said that her bed was shaking. I was standing in the corner of the room, and my first thought was thumping bass from the girl downstairs. Within ten seconds, the building started to shake. It was all over in about 30 seconds, but by the end I felt like the building had moved over about five feet.

The landlord came up immediately to reassure us that everything was fine and that these things happen in Xela all the time. This morning I checked the internet, and sure enough, it was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake 30 miles south of Xela. Check out the report here:

There was also some crazy weather last night, and I took my first storm pictures with my new camera. They're up on Picasa.

Today Kalya and I checked out the cemetery near the bus stop we use every day. It was a cool, old Latin American cemetary. As we walked to the back, we saw a group of cattle grazing among the graves. This was obviously ridiculous, and so it's the photo of the day.

We've now completed 32 interviews. Yay! Tomorrow we're headed for a weekend trip the the Pacific coast, where we will certainly not have internet. Hasta Domingo!
