6/18/08 - 'Twas the night before Santa Maria

Tonight, around midnight, I will set off with a group to climb Volcán Santa María. It's the volcano that you can see looming over my pictures of the Palajunoj Valley (specifically the first few I uploaded). Tonight is a full moon, and every month groups climb the volcano and watch the sunrise from the top. At 3,772 meters, it's pretty high, although not nearly as high as El Misti, the volcano I climbed in Perú (5,822 meters).

From the top, you have a grand view over all the western highlands, and you find yourself towering over another, smaller volcano, which erupts every half hour or so. I have seen pictures, and it looks phenomenal.

This is actually the epoca of volcanos, because this weekend we're climbing Pacaya volcano near Guatemala City. It is a very popular climb of an active volcano, where rivers of lava flow down the mountain every day.

I wish I had a picture today, but there should be plenty from tonight's climb and this weekend's adventure in Antigua. So stay tuned...
