It doesn't get much better than today's photo of the day. This is a palapa near the shore of Lake Peten Itza. Kalya and I took a half-day trip over the El Remante, where we found this picture.
We arrived on an overnight bus from Guate at about 6:30am. After breakfast in a quirky, archaeological cafe (I know...), we headed around the lake to El Remante. We grabbed lunch there and I went for a swim in the gorgeous waters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous waters hide about a foot of slushy, muddy, silty nastiness that is the bottom of Lake Peten Itza. I only swam for about three minutes.
We spent the afternoon at Parque Natural Ixpanpajul. They are known for a series of swinging suspension bridges that connect parts of a 3km trail through the forest canopy. It's pretty expensive, but swinging in the breezes 40 meters over the forest floor is really exhilarating. So is swinging in a hammock at the mirador on top of the mountain.
All in all, a really wonderful day. We leave at 3:30am tomorrow to see the sunrise at Tikal, and we'll spend the whole day at the site. Who's excited?
