6/16/08 - First day of Spanish class

So today Kalya and I started Spanish classes. She had a really good experience. I'm changing teachers tomorrow.

My three hours of one-on-one Spanish started with a discussion of what I wanted out of the class. I was very explicit. I want a conversation class where the teacher directs the discussion to difficult topics which will challenge my Spanish. And I want every mistake I make to be corrected.

After explaining this, and my history of Spanish study, we started with articles. El vs. la. Then we did present tense. This all culminated with a conversation in present tense for the last ten minutes of class. It was painfully evident that I needed to change teachers within the first hour of class. Here's to hoping tomorrow is better.

In other news, my feet have never itched so much in my life. I didn't scratch a single time until Spanish class, and I was really proud of myself. But the frustration of reading sentences in present tense over and over and over again wore on me quickly.

It was like I was a chain smoker trying to quit. I had a constant urge all day to scratch my feet, and I was able to quell that urge until things got frustrating. Pretty soon I gave in and scratched my ankle. Soon I was rubbing my shoes together. By the time class was over, my feet were on fire. Really itchy feet and smoking are pretty similar - addictive, harmful, and relatively socially unacceptable.
